Hatboro-Horsham (Week 1) Competition

Last weekend, Cybersonics participated in FMA's Hatboro-Horsham event, which is considered a "Week 1" competition in the world of robots. We started off qualifiers with quite a rough patch, but were able to prevail in the end with seventh place. The top eight teams in the event then qualify as team captains for quarterfinals. Team 103 selected Teams 1811 (FRESH - Newark, NJ) and 1403 (Cougar Robotics - Skillman, NJ), who made great alliance partners in the quarterfinals. Although the alliance was unsuccessful in getting into semifinals, the competition was still a great way to connect with other FRC teams for a Week 1 competition. Week 1 competitions are important because they provide the framework for game strategy, and what other teams are using for their robots. Cybersonics can therefore improve on our own robot in between competitions, building up until Worlds in May.

Cybersonics can be seen competing once more at the Springside Chestnut Hill event from March 14-15th at 500 West Willow Grove Avenue in Roxborough, Philadelphia.

Thank You, Dr. Flowers

Dr. Woodie Flowers, engineer and founder of FIRST, was a big inspiration to our team since our inception in 1996. He was a firm believer in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), and most importantly, the phrase he coined Gracious Professionalism, a motto and ideology for teams of all four sectors of FIRST Robotics leagues. Without Gracious Professionalism, FIRST would not be as kind of an organization today, and teams would not have the same strength as we do with Woodie.

Our team has had several embraces with Dr. Flowers throughout our twenty-two seasons of being a FIRST team. We have met him at Worlds quite a few times, he's waved our team flag on the field, and our members have been able to talk to him, and thank him for his work in inspiring students to reach for the skies with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.

Woodie even waved our flag at Worlds in 2003, the year we won the Chairman's Award.
To celebrate Dr. Flowers' life, a group of FRC students from around the world created "Wreaths For Woodie", an organization where FIRST teams and students from all four leagues to send in a team button with a wreath or flower-like design around the button. Cybersonics FRC #103 participated in this by creating our own design and button, with the values of Dr. Woodie Flowers taking center stage.

The FIRST Community will never forget Dr. Flowers' lasting impact and legacy on not only sparking STEAM, but civility and Gracious Professionalism on us all.
